چکیده

A number of emission and absorption features are expected to be visible in high energy resolution X-ray spectra of type 1 AGN with ionized gas along the line of sight (so called " warm absorbers "). Emission strongly depends on the geometrical configuration of the gas, while absorption along the line of sight does not. Absorption features include photoelectric absorption K and L edges along with many strong Kα, Kβ and L resonance absorption lines from the most abundant elements. We present detailed simulations of our " photoelectric + resonant absorption " model with the high energy resolution gratings and calorimeters of AXAF, XMM and Constellation-X, and discuss the relevant physics which can be addressed with the new generation of X-ray spectrometers.

Ionized Absorbers in AGN: the role of collisional ionization and time-evolving photoionization

In this paper we explore collisional ionization and time-evolving photoionization in the, X-ray discovered, ionized absorbers in Seyfert galaxies. These absorbers show temporal changes inconsistent with simple equilibrium models. We develop a simple code to follow the temporal evolution of non-equilibrium photoionized gas. As a result several effects appear that are easily observable; and which...

Scattering and absorption in soft X-ray selected AGN: an optical polarization survey

We have surveyed the optical linear polarization of a completely identified sample of 43 bright soft-X-ray-selected ROSAT AGN. Most (40) of these AGN show low polarization (∼<1%), and no clear optical reddening. This supports the suggestion from rapid X-ray variability, disk-like spectral energy distributions, and lack of cold X-ray absorption, that we are viewing a bare AGN disk. IRAS F12397+3...

New Chandra/ HST-STIS results on Seyfert I AGN: Photoionized Outflows

We present soft X-ray results from observations with Chandra (HETGS) of the Seyfert I AGN NGC 4593 and Mrk 509. We discuss the photoionized outflows associated with Seyfert I AGN in terms of their absorption spectral signatures and discuss their kinematics, column density and ionization state. We discuss the link between UV and X-ray absorbers in Mrk 509 (which was simultaneously observed with ...

A SOFT X-RAY STUDY OF TYPE I AGN OBSERVED WITH Chandra HETGS

We present the results of a uniform analysis of the soft X-ray spectra of fifteen type I AGN observed with the high resolution X-ray gratings on board Chandra. We found that ten of the fifteen AGN exhibit signatures of an intrinsic ionized absorber. The absorbers are photoionized and outflowing, with velocities in the range ∼ 10−10 km s. The column density of the warm absorbing gas is ∼ 10cm. N...

On the Nature of the Z = 0 X-ray Absorbers: Ii. the Contrast between Local and Agn Host Galaxy Absorption

We search for highly–ionized gas near three AGN host galaxies using the Chandra low–energy transmission grating spectrograph. Strong absorption lines from such gas are seen at z = 0, most likely from one or more of the following components: (1) a Galactic corona, (2) the Local Group medium, and (3) an extended warm–hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filament passing through our local overdensity. ...
